Republic FC extended its USL Pro unbeaten streak to nine matches Saturday night with a 0-0 draw against host Wilmington (N.C.) Hammerheads FC, the team reported.
Playoff-bound Republic FC (16-6-4, 52 points) remained in second place, three points behind Orlando City SC and two ahead of the Richmond Kickers, who tied Orange County Blues FC 1-1.
Republic FC started strongly, pressuring the Wilmington defense and creating opportunities. In the 36th minute, Republic FC’s Chad Bartlome settled the ball in the middle of the box and rocketed a shot that went just over the bar. In the 40th minute, Max Alvarez was fouled in the middle of the field, setting up a long free kick. Alvarez sent a line drive shot toward the upper right corner of the goal, but goalkeeper Brad Stuver made the save.
Wilmington (8-7-10) seemed to receive a spark off the bench in the second half and pressured Republic FC’s defense for the final 15 minutes, but goalkeeper Jake Gleeson was up to the task and recorded his fifth shutout.
