The San Jose Earthquakes have traded seldom-used forward Adam Jahn to the Columbus Crew SC for targeted allocation money, the teams announced Saturday.

The Jesuit High School graduate and former Republic FC forward will have a chance at a new start after 3 1/2 years in San Jose, where he netted six goals and one assist in 62 appearances.

“I love playing and I am glad to have an opportunity to be coming to a new club,” Jahn told the Crew.

The Quakes (6-6-8) have talked about making midsummer changes after falling to eighth place in the 10-team Western Conference because of a lack of scoring. San Jose has scored only 22 goals in 20 games.

It’s unclear how much money the team acquired and whether it could lead to a significant signing. Targeted allocation money can only be used for players earning more than the maximum salary of $457,500.

San Jose drafted Jahn, 25, out of Stanford in the first round of the MLS supplemental draft in 2013.

He scored four goals in his first nine appearances for a promising start but struggled after that. The forward spent time on loan with his hometown Sacramento team, helping Republic FC win the United Soccer League Pro championship in 2014.

“Adam has a strong physical presence, excellent work rate and is a threat inside the penalty box,” Columbus coach Gregg Berhalter said.

Jahn had a career-best 26 MLS appearances last year and played in 10 games with the Earthquakes in 2016.
