Republic FC to play friendly against Chivas de Guadalajara

Republic FC will play Chivas de Guadalajara in a friendly at Bonney Field on Oct. 5.

It will be Republic FC’s first match against the famed Liga MX side.

“To play a club the size of Chivas is always an attraction to the players, club and the sport,” Republic FC coach Paul Buckle said in a release. “We are always interested in playing top teams, and we’ve demonstrated this by adding an iconic club such as Chivas to our growing list of international opponents.”

Chivas, one of the founding members of Liga MX, has won 11 Primera Division titles and never has been relegated from Mexico’s top division.

Chivas players Marco Bueno, Michael Perez, Carlos Salcedo and Carlos Cisneros are playing for Mexico’s national team at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez (Bayer Leverkusen), Marco Fabian (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Carlos Vela (Real Sociedad) are among the homegrown Chivas academy players who played for Mexico’s national team and have gone on to international success.

This will be the second Liga MX team Republic FC has played. Sacramento hosted Atlas FC for friendlies in 2014 and 2015 at Bonney Field.

The friendly is not included in the Republic FC season-ticket package. Season-ticket holders have until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday to purchase seats before they go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Friday at Ticketmaster.com.
