In its 2015 debut, Republic FC surrendered a two-goal lead in the final 16 minutes for a 2-2 draw with Fresno Fuego FC in a friendly Saturday night, the team reported.
Eight players from Republic FC’s starting lineup were regular starters during the team’s 2014 USL Pro championship season, including Thomas Stewart, its leading scorer, and captain Justin Braun. The other three starters – Bilal Duckett, Patrick McLain and Philip Lund – were trialists who were invited to join the club for further evaluation during training camp.
Despite a strong veteran presence in the first half, Republic FC struggled to produce on the attack, taking just three shots. Goalie McLian stood out, making six saves, as did defender Duckett, who made several big clearances in the first 10 minutes.
The second half was considerably more productive for Republic FC, which substituted all 11 players.

It still took Republic FC 25 minutes to score. In the 70th minute, trialist Richie Cardozo made a run for an angled shot outside of the box on the near side. Cardozo’s shot was just outside the reach of Fresno goaltender Sean Taufer to put Republic FC up 1-0.
Minutes later, a late tackle on Cardozo in the box resulted in a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Cardozo slotted the ball home for a 2-0 lead.
But Fresno countered less than a minute later when a break in Republic FC’s back line gave Daniel Kazinsky an opening to sail the ball past goaltender Dominik Jakubek.
In the final minutes, Republic FC looked tired as it struggled to keep up with Fresno’s quick attacks, and Kazinsky scored in the 83rd minute.
“Tonight was disappointing, especially from the first group,” Republic FC coach Preki said.
