Kings notes: Rookie Stauskas impacts game with his passing

Rookie guard Nik Stauskas’ first summer league game not scoring in double figures was not seen as a problem for the Kings.

In Thursday’s win over Minnesota, Stauskas had four points and attempted only three shots in 24 minutes.

Stauskas was coming off his best scoring game of summer league, 15 points in a win over D-League Select.

While Stauskas’ top skill is his shooting, the Kings liked that he was able to impact the game.

“We need to get him more shots, but I thought he had a good game for us,” Kings summer league coach Ty Corbin said. “Although he only had three shots and (four) points, he had five assists and played a good game making plays for teammates and did a pretty good job on the defensive end. He may not have scored or made a lot of shots, but he played a good game for us.”

The five assists were the most by Stauskas during summer league. He totaled six assists in his first three summer league games.

The Kings believe Stauskas could play point guard this season, so his ability to set up teammates is important.

The Kings have struggled because too many players do not function well when they aren’t scoring.

That Stauskas still has an impact without scoring is a positive heading into training camp in the fall.

“He made plays for teammates, and he didn’t drop his head and feel sorry for himself,” Corbin said. “He just continued to play to just win the ballgame.”

Still playing – The Kings play Chicago in the summer league quarterfinals today at Thomas & Mack Center.

If the Kings lose, their time in summer league is over. A win would put the Kings into the semifinals on Sunday.

The championship game is Monday.

Many teams aren’t pleased with the tournament format because it keeps players and coaches in Las Vegas longer.

Corbin isn’t complaining.

“They have a tournament and there’s a championship at the end of it,” Corbin said. “It’s an opportunity to be a champion, so why not go for it?”
