There’s no rosy picture to be painted regarding the Kings’ standing in the latest national NBA power rankings sampled here. An 0-4 week – and the ongoing soap opera starring DeMarcus Cousins and coach George Karl – dropped the team as many as five spots.
There is no way to tweak the math. Perhaps the lone poll that didn’t pull the trap door lever on the Kings was NBC Sports, which dropped them just one spot. That stands as the lone bright spot.
Yahoo’s Most Interesting Rankings gave the Kings an 11th-place nod. That would have been great, had the Kings gone 4-0 and rekindled playoff hopes. But they didn’t earn No. 11 for any reason that is remotely positive.
“I’m Going Down,” an old song about a relationship gone south by Bruce Springsteen is the perfect theme song for this week’s rankings roundup.

NBA.com: 26th, down from 21st. From the site: “It had been a while (like, three weeks) since the Kings had some real drama, so DeMarcus Cousins shouted at George Karl in a timeout, the team suspended Cousins for Friday’s loss to Orlando, and Cousins later said it was the coach’s call.”
NBC Sports: 26th, down from 25th. From the site: “The DeMarcus Cousins/George Karl feud continues to go Hatfields vs. McCoys and is something the front office has to address this summer. And not in a ‘we can patch this relationship up’ kind of way.”
ESPN: 25th, down from 22nd. From the site: “It’s going to be a L-O-N-G final 17 games, given the fresh tensions surrounding DeMarcus Cousins and George Karl and with Sacramento also poised to forfeit its first-round pick unless it’s in the top 10.”
CBS Sports: 24th, down from 20th. From the site: “Whatever the basketball organizational version of ‘nuke it from orbit’ is, do that.”
SI.com: 26th, down from 24th. From the site: “…the Kings are nosediving toward elimination with no clear off-season resolution.”
Yahoo: 11th, up from not ranked last week. Yahoo’s rankings are dubbed ‘Most Interesting’ and the Kings take their spot here not because of their on-court success last week. From the site: “Losing nine of 10 is bad enough, but with the beef between George Karl and DeMarcus Cousins again broiling and no real hope of a playoff spot, the situation in Sacramento could get much more volatile over the final 17 games.”
