Postgame notes: Evans a surprise scoring threat off the bench again

The Kings could use a low-post scorer off the bench with Carl Landry sidelined with a knee injury.

Naturally that player would be Reggie Evans, right?

Evans, whose career average is 4.1 points, posted his second consecutive double-digit scoring game with 13 points in the Kings’ 116-103 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at Bradley Center.

“DeMarcus (Cousins) is complaining he’s the fourth option behind Reggie,” joked Kings coach Michael Malone.

Evans and rookie Ray McCallum (career-high 15 points) gave the Kings some scoring from the bench, making it so the starting lineup doesn’t have to carry more of the offensive load.

“I’d be lying if I said I was expecting that,” Malone said of Evans. “He puts in a lot of time before and after practice and he cares about the game. You’re going to get out of it what you put into it and Reggie’s a great example of that.”

Cousins seems to be adjusting to his new role in the offense.

“I think I’ve moved to like the fourth option on the team,” Cousins said. “Isaiah (Thomas), Rudy (Gay), then Reggie, then me. I think he found his niche, I can’t explain it.”

*The Kings had their way inside most of the night. Jason Thompson grabbed 13 rebounds and Gay had seven. Milwaukee had had 37 rebounds as a team.

What was the plan?

“Take advantage of their – what’s the word I’m looking for – thinness on the inside,” Cousins said, who had 10 rebounds. “That’s what we did and it worked well for us.”

*Thomas was not happy about the first ejection of his career. Thomas was called for two technical fouls with 4:19 left in the game.

Thomas said he being tossed from a game is not something he wants his two children seeing. It’s a reason he was upset with the two quick whistles.

“My family and people that watch me know I don’t have no attitude,” Thomas said. “I’ve never been kicked out of a game in my life. I don’t do that and it’s disappointing for it to happen that that quick, for me not to say anything disrespectful, cuss at a ref or nothing to get two techincals. I don’t have a reputation for getting technicals or for badmouthing anybody. We’ll just see what happens.”

Thomas plans to appeal to see if the technical fouls will be rescinded. Thomas has had one rescinded this season.

If they are not, Thomas would have nine technical fouls this season, which would tie him for sixth most in the league this season.

“He said he didn’t’ say anything but obviously the referee must have heard something,” Malone said. “And the reality is I didn’t like how we closed that fourth quarter out and that’s part of it. We have to have composure and poise down the stretch. We have to learn how to play with a lead and be disciplined. That’s what good teams do.”

*The Kings are 9-20 on the road this season after their win after winning eight road games all of last season.

“The record doesn’t show it but we’re a lot better team than in the past,” Cousins said. “We’re continuing to grow. Still got a lot of work to do but I feel like we’re on the right path.”

*Based on the video below, Bucks forward Ersan Ilyasova can expect a one-game suspension from the NBA for this punch to Evans during the game.
