DeMarcus Cousins’ game winner lifts Kings over Suns

Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins (15) is congratulated after his game winning shot during the Kings 85-83 victory against the Phoenix Suns at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

DeMarcus Cousins watched his shot hit the back or the rim, bounce and eventually fall through the hoop at time expired.

And with that, the Kings had overcome a bad fourth quarter and escaped with an 85-83 win over the Phoenix Suns at Sleep Train Arena.

The Kings had lost three in a row and 11 of their last 12.

The Kings had been up by 73-59 after three quarters, but were outscored 24-12 in the fourth quarter, only to be saved by Cousins shot from 19 feet over Markieff Morris.

“We needed it bad,” Cousins said. “Uplifted these guys in the locker room. We’ve been through a lot this past month. So we definitely needed it.”

The Kings were without Darren Collison (strained right hip flexor) and Rudy Gay (sore left foot).

The Kings have also played with the speculation George Karl will be hired soon to replace coach Tyrone Corbin, the Kings’ second coaching change this season.

Corbin has tried not to make the situation about him.

“Our guys have been on the edge,” Corbin said. “When you don’t play your best game, and you lose games, and you’re hearing all kinds of talk about what’s goign to happen – well I told these guys that the only thing you can control is your play on the floor.”

The Kings (18-32) nearly had to deal with another loss as former King Isaiah Thomas scored 12 of Phoenix’s 24 points in the fourth.

Thomas finished with 26 points to lead the Suns (29-24).

Cousins had 28 points and 12 rebounds. It was teh first time the Kings have won at home scoring 85 or less since beating Dallas, 85-80, March 12, 2006.
