Why you might not see the 49ers or Raiders in their Color Rush uniforms often

The NFL's Color Rush uniforms became a topic of discussion Tuesday.

While one report had the predominantly single-colored "gimmick" outfits going away, another challenged that news.

The NFL Color Rush has been done during “Thursday Night Football” telecasts on NFL Network and CBS. The teams don uniforms where the jersey, pants and socks are the same color – in some cases a bright or loud one.

Jason Barrett of Barrett Sports Media tweeted Tuesday afternoon that, according to a Fox Sports official, the uniforms were going away. The network has taken over broadcast rights for the regular slate of Thursday games.

However, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the uniforms aren't being completely phased out and there could be some changes to when they are worn, pending votes from team owners.

The 49ers' version is all black with red numbers and letters. The Raiders wear all white with silver markings.

Those are pretty tame in comparison with some teams. Some that stand out include:

The Seattle Seahawks, whose Color Rush uniforms are a neon green that resemble a highlighter.

The Miami Dolphins, who wear all orange with aquamarine trim.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, whose uniforms are all gold with teal numbers and letters.

The Los Angeles Rams, who sport yellow with blue trim.

The NFL began experimenting with Color Rush in 2012 and went to a full rollout in 2016.

Some uniforms proved problematic for a number of fans. A game between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets in 2015 had some viewers complaining they couldn't tell which teams they were watching due to being red-green color blind.

So will the uniforms be going away? NFL fans will find out in May, when owners meet to vote.
