Nickel cornerback Chris Davis is doubtful for the 49ers’ season opener Monday, raising the prospect that Jimmie Ward could resume his former role covering the opponent’s slot receiver.
Davis apparently injured his hamstring Wednesday and has not practiced since. Ward will start at outside cornerback. But he could be asked to slide inside Monday when the Rams use three or more receivers. Other options include Keith Reaser, who is listed as questionable with an ankle injury, and Dontae Johnson. Safety Eric Reid also could get snaps at nickel cornerback this season.
The NFL this year has eliminated the “probable” category this year. “Questionable” now means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game. “Doubtful” means it is unlikely the player will participate. “Out” means the player will not play.
Defensive linemen Arik Armstead and Quinton Dial, both of whom are potential starters, were limited practice participants all week. Glenn Dorsey was limited on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. He sat out Thursday’s session.
