SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers will go into today’s game against the Rams with at least five wide receivers but just three running backs after they promoted receiver Chris Harper to the active roster and released running back DuJuan Harris.
Harper, who played at Cal, had been part of the practice squad during the run-up to the game. He will wear No. 14 and presumably will back up receiver Jeremy Kerley (No. 17) both at the slot-receiver position and on punts. Cornerback Chris Davis had been Kerley’s back up on returns but is doubtful for today’s game with a hamstring injury.
The other receivers on the roster are Torrey Smith, Quinton Patton, Rod Streater and rookie Aaron Burbridge, who may be inactive against the Rams.
Harris didn’t make the 49ers’ initial 53-man roster. But the team added him after placing cornerback Will Redmond on injured reserve. The 49ers’ running backs are Carlos Hyde, Shaun Draughn and Mike Davis.
