The 49ers are interested in Bills free agent Erik Pears, a guard who also can play tackle. The Jets and Broncos are in the mix as well, according to a league source.
The 32-year-old Pears last year started every game at right guard for Buffalo. In the nine years prior, however, he played tackle, primarily on the right side. The 49ers envision the 6-8, 316-pound veteran as a guard who can play tackle in a pinch.
Pears has also played for the Broncos, Raiders and Jaguars. He was a standout in NFL Europe when Jim Tomsula and several of his assistants were coaches there. CSN Bay Area reported that Pears visited with the 49ers on Thursday.
The 49ers have an opening at left guard after Mike Iupati signed a free agent deal with the Cardinals. Last year, Jonathan Martin served as the team’s backup tackle, but there was a considerable drop-off in talent when he played in place of starter Anthony Davis on the right side.
