Three things to watch
BEATHARD’S FIRST START
The 49ers are poised to make a big splash at quarterback, either in free agency or in the draft. That is, unless C.J. Beathard dazzles in the second half of the season. He got off to a good start Sunday with 245 yards in 2 1/2 quarters. He must develop a better rapport with wide receivers Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin, with whom he hasn’t had much practice time this year.
Solomon Thomas led all 49ers defensive linemen in snaps against Washington, the first time since early last season that DeForest Buckner wasn’t the unit’s snap leader. The 49ers will lean even more heavily on Thomas, their first-round draft pick, now that their 2015 top pick, Arik Armstead, is out with a broken hand.
A week after finishing behind rookie Matt Breida in playing time, Carlos Hyde got the bulk of the carries – and two touchdowns – against Washington. But he averaged just 2.2 yards and only 1.4 yards a week earlier against Indianapolis. With a rookie at quarterback, the 49ers would prefer to lean on their running game and should have a chance at that against the Cowboys, who are 22nd in rushing yards allowed per game.
