49ers sign tackle Shon Coleman to 1-year contract
The big news for the 49ers on Monday was their franchise-altering trade of DeForest Buckner hours after giving fellow defensive lineman Arik Armstead a big five-year contract. But those weren’t the only decisions Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch made two days before the start of the NFL’s 2020 league year.
San Francisco made a much smaller move signing offensive lineman Shon Coleman to a one-year contract extension, the team announced, bringing him back for a chance to compete for a roster spot after his 2019 campaign ended in the first preseason game.
Coleman broke his ankle in the first quarter of the exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys, which proved to be an under-the-radar injury throughout the season. That’s because the 49ers went through a multiweek stint in October without both starting tackles, Joe Staley (fractured fibula) and Mike McGlinchey (torn meniscus), forcing rookie Justin Skule and former AAF player Daniel Brunskill to start.
The 49ers initially traded for Coleman around final cuts in 2018, sending a conditional late-round pick in 2019 to the Cleveland Browns, who used a third-round pick on Coleman in 2016. Coleman played in college at Auburn. He has 23 career starts, including all 16 games with the Browns in 2017.
