Snap Counts: 49ers No. 3 receiver? It's more like 3A and 3B

The 49ers kept their No. 3 receiver a mystery prior to Sunday's season opener. And even afterward, you can't say there was a dramatic revelation.

Brandon Lloyd entered the game ahead of Stevie Johnson and played more snaps -- 22 to Johnson's 19. Johnson, however, finished with two catches, both coming on third down and both resulting in first downs. Colin Kaepernick fired two passes along the sideline to Lloyd, but both were incomplete.

Further muddying the matter was starter Michael Crabtree's health. He was far from 100 percent with a calf injury. Crabtree started the game but obviously was not himself. By the fourth quarter, he was watching the game from the sideline with a baseball cap on his head and both Lloyd and Johnson filled in for him.

Meanwhile, the 49ers' tight ends did not play as much as they typically do. Vernon Davis was on the field for all but one of the team's 58 offensive plays. But No. 2 tight end Vance McDonald, who had been a hot target in the preseason, played only 17 snaps (29 percent) while No. 3 tight end Derek Carrier didn't take any offensive snaps.

Both Carrier and McDonald had been dealing with hamstring strains, which may explain their small-ish snap counts.

On defense, four rookies dressed for the game, but linebacker Chris Borland and safety L.J. McCray only played special teams. Fellow rookies Jimmie Ward played 46 snaps (67 percent) while Dontae Johnson played 45 snaps (65 percent).

Both Ward and cornerback Chris Culliver likely will be in blue "no-contact" jerseys this week as they go through the league's post-concussion protocol.
