49ers pregame: Vernon Davis out; Jonathan Martin to take on KC’s Justin Houston

Vernon Davis will miss his second full game this season as the 49ers’ tight end continues to recover from a back issue that forced him out of last week’s game. Vance McDonald will start in his place. Derek Carrier is the only other healthy tight end in today’s lineup.

The 49ers are 1-5 over the last two years in games in which Davis either is knocked out of or misses entirely.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Martin will start at right tackle in place of Anthony Davis, who suffered knee and ankle injuries when he was hit from behind against the Eagles. Neither Anthony Davis nor Vernon Davis practiced during the week. Martin will be matched for most of the afternoon against Justin Houston, who is tied for the league lead with five sacks.

As expected, Perrish Cox will start his fourth straight game at cornerback in place of Tramaine Brock, who may be out through the bye with a turf toe issue. Defensive lineman Tank Carradine also is inactive. He has missed all but one game this season.

For the Chiefs, A.J. Jenkins will start at receiver in place of Donnie Avery while Ron Parker starts for injured safety Eric Berry. One-time 49er Marcus Cooper will start at cornerback for Kansas City.
