Do you think Baalke stocked up picks for possible Kaep replacement in 2016?

ANSW: No, the stockpile of picks in 2016 (perhaps 12, depending on compensatories) and 2017 (nine) is typical Trent Baalke; it's become common for him to have double-digit picks going into the draft. However, it theoretically gives him the leeway to jump ahead in the draft and take the player he really covets. Offensive tackle and pass rusher are the top two most obvious positions of need at this moment. Quarterback? Let's see how the year plays out.

Do you believe the possibility of Anthony Davis returning next year affects how we are addressing the RT position?

ANSW: No, I don't think it has a bearing right now because no one knows exactly what will happen with Davis next year. It will be a huge question mark after the season when the 49ers are figuring out everything from free agency to the draft to the salary cap.

Will they 49ers first offensive unit play tonight? To get something going since they haven't been putting points on the board?

ANSW: I doubt if any first-team skill position players -- Carlos Hyde, Torrey Smith, Vernon Davis, etc. -- play tonight. But the first-team offensive line needs quality reps together. It could be a scenario in which Joe Staley and Alex Boone sit out, but everyone to their right plays. (And if there's no Staley, I doubt we'd see Colin Kaepernick).

Do you think B Thomas is being "saved" to eventually inherit LG?

ANSW: If Thomas were one of the five best linemen right now, he'd be in the lineup. I think the 49ers are playing him on both the right and left side in order to decide which players are in uniform on game day and which are not. That is, in order for Thomas to dress, the team has to be confident he can play at least two spots. Looney and Silberman can play three spots.

On Hard Knocks, Bill talked to the players about not telling reporters anything and gave them scripted answers. Bother u?

ANSW: Of course it does. It's hard to write interesting stories when the subjects are going out of their way to be uninteresting. But it's not surprising in the least. The people who should be bothered the most are the players. They are essentially being told, "We'll do the talking for you. Just shut up and do your job." When you try too hard to stifle, there are bound to be leaks. (See: every poorly run organization; ever)

Who on the roster is the Porsche 911 of the 49ers???

ANSW: I actually gave this a lot of thought. I went with Reggie Bush. He's fast, he's expensive, he's iconic. And he spends a lot of time in the shop.

Who looked better in TC, Okoye or Armstead?

ANSW: Armstead obviously is more athletic, agile than Okoye, who was a bit of a one-trick pony as far as pass rushing. But Armstead could use Okoye's brute strength.
