SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers had two spots open on their practice squad and filled them Tuesday with a wide receiver, Andrew Turzilli, and a center, Brian Folkerts.
Folkerts, 25, was a teammate of 49ers linebacker Michael Wilhoite at Washburn University. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Saints in 2012. The Panthers picked him up the following year, and he appeared in 29 contests -- including two games against the 49ers -- over that span.
Turzilli, 24, went undrafted in the spring and spent the offseason with the Titans. He played at Rutgers last season.
One of San Francisco’s practice-squad spots opened Saturday when guard Andrew Tiller was elevated to the active roster. Another came about Tuesday when the Eagles signed offensive tackle Tanner Hawkinson to their active roster. Hawkinson (6 foot 5, 300 pounds) was the lone member of the practice squad who did not spend training camp with the 49ers.
