The 49ers will be without two defensive backs, Jimmie Ward and Tramaine Brock, against a Giants team that uses three or more wide receivers on nearly three quarters of their offensive snaps. Ward is dealing with a foot injury while Brock strained his hamstring.
The injuries mean that Perrish Cox will see action at both outside cornerback and nickel cornerback. Cox also will be the team’s punt returner with Bruce Ellington out with a sprained ankle.
Rookie Dontae Johnson is likely to enter the game in passing situations. Cornerback Leon McFadden also promises to be in uniform Sunday.
Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said he thought Glenn Dorsey, who is coming back from a torn biceps, is “close” to playing but wouldn’t say if Dorsey will take over at nose tackle from injured Ian Williams (leg). “I don’t know if he’s close enough yet,” Fangio said.
