Report: 49ers work out cornerbacks as supply dwindles

**UPDATE** The 49ers ended up signing Marcus Cromartie to the practice squad and releasing practice-squad tight end Xavier Grimble. With Garrett Celek (back) practicing again, the team had a surplus of tight ends.

Running low on defensive backs, the 49ers worked out three on Monday. According to the National Football Post, free agents Drayton Florence, Dominique Franks and Marcus Cromartie were in Santa Clara on Monday.

At one point this season, the 49ers had a surplus of cornerbacks. Chris Cook, however, was lost for the season when he suffered a severe hamstring injury on a punt-return against Denver in Week 7. Nickel cornerback Jimmie Ward was placed on injured reserve with foot injury suffered against New Orleans.

Meanwhile, Week 1 starter Tramaine Brock has missed all but three games with toe and hamstring injuries.

The 49ers' starters Sunday in the Meadowlands were Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver. Rookie Dontae Johnson entered the game in nickel situations and played the slot position. The 49ers used safety Craig Dahl as a sixth defensive back in their dime package. The team's fourth cornerback, Leon McFadden, played one defensive snap.
