The 49ers bulked up their roster with two tight ends hours before today’s game with the Seahawks, activating Garrett Celek from the physically-unable-to-perform list and elevating rookie Asante Cleveland from the practice squad. To make room, tight end Derek Carrier was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury while outside linebacker Chase Thomas was released.
Cleveland will wear no. 45; Celek wears no. 88.
Celek had been the team’s blocking tight end since being acquired as an undrafted rookie in 2012. A pinched nerve in his back slowed him during the offseason, but he said this week that surgery alleviated the issue almost instantly and that he has felt healthy for some time.
Cleveland (Christian Brothers High) was active for one other game, Week 3 against Arizona, this season. The 49ers were without tight ends Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald for that game and they leaned heavily on the passing attack in the 23-14 loss.
Cleveland, Celek and Vernon Davis are the only tight ends available for the 49ers today. McDonald will miss his second straight game with a back injury.
Carrier injured his foot early in Sunday’s win over Washington. He returned briefly in the second half but was seen in a walking boot this week.
As was the case last week, Jonathan Martin will start for Anthony Davis (concussion) at right tackle. Perrish cox will start for Tramaine Brock (hamstring) at cornerback and also will handle punt returns.
For the Seahawks, Lemuel Jeanpierre will start at center for Patrick Lewis, who himself is taking over for injured starter Max Unger. Jeanpierre had been the team’s backup at center the previous three seasons but was released in September. The Seahawks re-signed him earlier this month.
Former 49ers fullback Will Tukuafu (No. 46), receiver Ricardo Lockette (No. 83) and defensive end Demarcus Dobbs (No. 95) are in uniform for the Seahawks.
