ST. LOUIS -- Anquan Boldin’s consecutive games streak will end at 46.
The 49ers’ veteran receiver has been dealing with what the team has described as a hamstring strain, which he exacerbated Thursday. He did not practice Thursday or Friday and was declared inactive for today’s game against the Rams.
While Boldin is out, Jerome Simpson will be in a 49ers uniform for the first time this season. Simpson did not play last year and was suspended for the first six games of the season. Either Quinton Patton or Bruce Ellington could start opposite Torrey Smith at receiver, depending on the offensive package the team is in. Simpson will provide backup.
With Carlos Hyde (foot) out, the 49ers’ running backs are Reggie Bush, Mike Davis and Kendall Gaskins, who was elevated from the practice squad Saturday. Gaskins is wearing No. 30; Simpson is wearing No. 14. Bush is expected to start; fullback Bruce Miller also could see short-yardage carries today.
Boldin was listed as questionable with a hamstring strain but said on Friday he was certain he would play. The last time he missed a game was at the end of the 2012 when the Ravens rested him and several other veterans as they got ready for the playoffs.
Since then Boldin has played in 46 straight games, including playoffs, though he was not at full speed for the 49ers’ Oct. 22 games against the Seahawks. Boldin, the 49ers’ leading receiver, said his issue actually has been an ‘alignment problem.’
Boldin is one of several names on the 49ers that has been bandied about as Tuesday’s trade deadline approaches. General manager Trent Baalke said he expects interest to heat up tonight and Monday. The deadline is 1 p.m. Tuesday.
