CHICAGO -- Center Daniel Kilgore, who hasn't played a snap since breaking his ankle in October of 2014, is active for today’s game against the Bears. The team did not announce any lineup chances for that position, though, signalling that Marcus Martin could make his 12th straight start.

The 49ers on Saturday moved Kilgore from the physically-unable-to perform list to the active roster for the first time this season. Kilgore suffered a broken ankle 13 months ago against Denver and has two surgeries since.

Kilgore took the roster spot of linebacker Shayne Skov, who was waived Saturday. The 49ers have five inside linebackers: starters NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite, as well as backups Gerald Hodges, Nick Bellore and Ray-Ray Armstrong, who is active for today’s game.

When Kilgore broke his ankle, he was ranked as Pro Football Focus' 11th-best center. Second-year player Martin has started in his place this season and has struggled in both pass protection and the running game. Pro Football Focus has him as the lowest-ranked center in the league.

Kilgore's practice routine has been gradually ramped up over the past three weeks as has his repetitions with the rest of the first-string offense. The 49ers could begin the game with Martin at center and work in Kilgore throughout the game.

Meanwhile, the 49ers have until Monday to move rookie recever DeAndre Smelter to the active roster. If they don’t, he will remain on the non-football injury list for the rest of the season and won’t be able to practice or play. The team’s decision on Smelter likely will depend on whether any receivers are injured in today’s game.

The 49ers seem to have an abundance of players at the position. Two receivers, Jerome Simpson and DeAndrew White, are inactive for today’s game.

The only lineup change announced by the 49ers is running back Shaun Draughn for Carlos Hyde. This will be Draughn’s fourth straight start.
