Perry Fewell, the ex-Giants defensive coordinator, is heading to the Bay Area today to meet with the 49ers about becoming their defensive backs coach, FOX Sports reported. Fewell, 52, coached defensive backs for eight years earlier in his career. NBC4 was first to connect Fewell and the 49ers.
Jim Tomsula’s hunt for assistant coaches has followed two themes -- coaches who have worked alongside him in the past and those who have head-coaching experience. Fewell served as the Bills interim head coach in 2009. He has been a head-coaching candidate in recent years and was on the 49ers’ list in 2011, the year they chose Jim Harbaugh.
So far, the 49ers have settled on a defensive coordinator, Eric Mangini, and a linebackers coach, Jason Tarver. They must hire a defensive line coach, a secondary coach and perhaps someone to coach inside linebackers. It’s possible that Ejiro Evero will serve as the assistant secondary coach.
