SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers are putting their depth chart where their mouths are
The team’s first depth chart, released Tuesday by the team’s public relations staff in advance of the preseason opener Sunday against the Texans, lists Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick as co-starters at quarterback. So far in training camp, snaps with the first-team offense have been mostly even between the two and on Tuesday the 49ers’ offensive coordinator said no one is leading the competition. Head coach Chip Kelly has said the same.
“I think as we get into the preseason and we get to playing live games, those things will start happening, but right now I wouldn’t say anyone is ahead of anybody,” Curtis Modkins said. “I just think they are both progressing like we want them to and both have been really good.”
Modkins said coaches have not yet discussed who will start the game against the Texans.

On the depth chart, Gabbert’s name comes first, followed by Kaepernick’s. But even that seems to be alphabetical in order.
The team’s other competition for a starting job, inside linebacker, lists “Ray-Ray Armstrong/Gerald Hodges/Michael Wilhoite” as the possible starters alongside NaVorro Bowman.
