SANTA CLARA -- Blaine Gabbert will start his third straight game Friday even though Colin Kaepernick, back from a fatigued throwing shoulder, will play in the game.

Gabbert got all of the first-team repetitions in the first two preseason games against Houston and Denver while Kaepernick was on the sideline. Kaepernick practiced in full this week, and the two split first-team repetitions in practice.

It's possible that both players will see snaps today with the 49ers' first-team offense, which was coach Chip Kelly's intention when training camp began.

“Yeah, no question,” Kelly said on Aug. 10. ‘That’s the only way to evaluate them.”

Meanwhile, defensive lineman Arik Armstead (shoulder), receiver Bryce Treggs (knee), linebacker Nick Bellore (knee), defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey (knee) and receiver DeAndre Smelter (hamstring) will not play.

Armstead, who suffered his injury Aug. 7, has not yet played in the preseason. He warmed up with the 49ers' strength and conditioning coach during pre-game warm-ups.

The 49ers' preseason finale is Thursday in San Diego. Last year, none of the 49ers' starters played in the fourth preseason game.
