Two Sierra ski resorts open Friday, two others to start lifts before Thanksgiving

Two Sierra ski resorts are opening Friday and two more are scheduled to start the lifts running the day before Thanksgiving.

With snow flurries in the mountains earlier this week and more on the way, Sierra resort operators are kicking off the 2016-17 ski and snowboard season. Some resorts are augmenting natural snowfall with machine-made powder.

Mount Rose opened at 9 a.m., while Boreal Mountain Resort is scheduled to open at noon. On Wednesday, Heavenly Lake Tahoe and Northstar are scheduled to begin the ski season.

“We’ve really been maximizing our snow making system, and that coupled with weather forecasts calling for snow and cold temperatures to continue this weekend and in to early next week, will allow our focus to remain committed to opening additional terrain as quickly as possible,” said Mike Pierce, director of marketing at Mount Rose Ski Tahoe.

Snow is expected on Sierra roads this weekend as a weather system brings rain to the valley and snowflakes to the mountains. Chains are expected to be required on trans-Sierra highways.
