With recent FE exam pass rates ranging between 60% and 72%, depending on the discipline, the quality of your FE prep course matters a lot more than people expect.

I went through each major FE prep option myself, testing the dashboards, study tools, and full-length practice exams to save engineering students time and money.

In this guide, I’ll break down what works, what doesn’t, and which features actually make a difference on exam day. If you want a study plan that saves time, builds confidence, and helps you pass the FE exam, you’re in the right place.

Which FE Prep Provider Should You Pick?

  • Choose the School of PE if you want the most complete FE exam prep system, strong instruction, and support across every engineering discipline.
  • Pick PPI2Pass if you want structured study plans, polished learning materials, and deep practice tools built by professional engineers.
  • Go with Civil Engineering Academy if you’re taking the FE Civil exam and want a clean, focused course with clear modules, step-by-step videos, realistic practice exams, and a CBT-style simulator without extra layers.
  • Choose Capstone Learning if you prefer narrated lessons, slower-paced explanations, and a simpler review style without relying on dashboards or advanced tools.
  • Select Genie Prep if you’re comfortable building your own study plan and mainly want lifetime access to short, step-by-step video walkthroughs for FE problems.
  • Pick TestMasters if you want a classroom-style experience with long, instructor-led sessions, structured workshops, and a pass guarantee, and you’re okay with a heavier time commitment.
  • Go with Engineering Education & Training if you prefer a steady weekly schedule, lecture-first teaching, and a traditional approach for FE Civil or Environmental prep.

1. School of PE: Best Overall FE Exam Prep Course

School of PE

When it comes to the FE exam, the School of PE feels more put-together than anything else I’ve used. The entire course follows the FE exam outline in a way that makes the study flow feel natural instead of scattered.

School of PE dashboard

You move through each topic in the right order, practice right after learning it, and build momentum without having to guess what comes next. It’s one of the few programs where the structure actually makes studying easier instead of heavier.

After comparing to sample questions, I can confidently say that the content closely matches the real exam, and the full-length practice test highlights exactly where you’re falling behind. The live classes were a standout, too. Having licensed engineers walk through problems in real time made the harder concepts click much faster.

What I liked most is how seamless everything feels. The lessons, practice, notes, and instruction all work together, so nothing feels stitched on or outdated. It’s a strong fit for engineering students who want a clear routine, enough practice to feel ready, and a course that genuinely supports you from start to finish.

2. PPI2Pass: Best for Structured, Traditional FE Exam Prep

PPI2Pass

PPI2Pass immediately felt different because of how it organized my study plan. I entered a random exam date (since I’m not actually taking it), blocked out the days I couldn’t study, and the system built a schedule that worked around this hypothetical lifestyle. If you need structure or you do better when someone tells you exactly what to work on, this setup helps a lot. I personally think a strong schedule is a must for studying, and PPI took the stress and guesswork out of that process for me.

The strongest part of the course is the practice. The question bank is large, the full-length exams feel close to the real test, and the web books explain concepts in a way that keeps everything manageable. The platform design leans a little old-school compared to newer FE prep courses, but the content is reliable and clear, which matters more when you’re trying to keep your study sessions focused.

Live classes add extra support and accountability, and the Passing Guarantee offers a level of reassurance. It’s not as flexible or polished as the top-ranked option, but if you want a disciplined study plan with a ton of practice to work through, PPI2Pass handles that very well.

Pros

  • Strong Study Structure: Built-in schedules remove guesswork.
  • Large Practice Library: Question banks push beyond exam difficulty.
  • Diagnostic Exams: Weak areas are easy to spot early.
  • Full Discipline Coverage: Supports every FE exam track.
  • Passing Guarantee: Adds reassurance for first-time test takers.

Cons

  • Heavy Reading: Web books can feel dense if you prefer video-based teaching.
  • Older Platform Layout: Not as modern or smooth as School of PE.

Bottom Line: Why Choose PPI2Pass?

PPI2Pass is great if you are like me and like structure. If you want a ton of practice to work through, this is another strength. The study plan keeps you on track, and the content goes deep. It can feel a little old-school at times, but it’s solid, reliable, and gets you ready without wasting your study time.

3. Civil Engineering Academy: Best for Civil-Only Prep

Civil Engineering Academy

CEA keeps everything centered on the FE Civil exam, which makes the study flow feel a lot simpler. The layout is easy to move through, and the modules follow the NCEES outline almost exactly, so you’re never guessing what to review next.

Civil Engineering Academy prep

You get 14 clear modules, step-by-step walkthroughs, two full-length practice exams, and a CBT simulator that, according to those who have used it to pass, feels close to the actual test.

What I liked most is how exam-specific the content is. You don’t wade through extra topics, and the problem videos explain tougher Civil concepts in a way that feels manageable.

Compared to the School of PE, CEA is more stripped-down and focused, without all the extra tools or live class options. But that’s also what makes it easy to use. If you just want a clean, Civil-only FE prep course that gets straight to the point, CEA delivers a simple, reliable setup.

WordPress Data Table Plugin

Package Options

  • ➡️ One Month Access: Includes all FE Civil modules, two practice exams, the CBT simulator, and community access.
  • ➡️ Six Month Access: Adds more study time, full FE library access, and workshop recordings.
  • ➡️ Yearly Access: Best for longer timelines. Includes everything plus priority support and a kickoff session.

Key Features

  • 14 structured FE Civil modules aligned to current NCEES specifications
  • Over 300 step-by-step Civil problem walkthrough videos
  • Two full-length FE Civil practice exams with solutions
  • Realistic CBT simulator for pacing and exam day familiarity
  • Downloadable notes, slides, and review sheets
  • Active private study community
  • Desktop and mobile-friendly access

Pros

  • Clean Module Organization: The course is broken into 14 clear modules that make it easy to know what to study next.
  • Strong Video Walkthroughs: Step-by-step problem explanations help break down tougher FE concepts without rushing.
  • Realistic Exam Practice: Two full-length FE Civil practice exams help you gauge readiness before test day.
  • CBT-Style Simulator: The simulator helps you get comfortable with timing and the on-screen exam format.

Cons

  • Civil Only: Not available for Mechanical, Electrical, or other engineering disciplines.
  • No Advanced Tools: Missing analytics or adaptive study features.
  • Smaller Question Bank: Less practice than School of PE or PPI2Pass.
  • Limited Practice Volume: Practice problems are noticeably fewer than higher-ranked FE courses.

Bottom Line: Why Choose Civil Engineering Academy?

CEA is a strong pick if you want a straightforward, Civil-only FE prep course with focused lessons and realistic exam practice. It doesn’t have the advanced tools of bigger platforms, but I still think that the structured modules, walkthrough videos, and CBT simulator make it a reliable option for passing the FE Civil exam.

4. Capstone Learning: Best for Simple, Narrated Lessons

Capstone Learning

Capstone has more of a classic review-course vibe. When I tried it, most of the studying happened through narrated lessons that move at a steady pace, with worked examples you follow along with. It covers multiple FE and PE disciplines, including Civil, (score) but the style stays the same across all of them: slow, clear walkthroughs and a smaller set of practice problems for each topic.

The platform is basic. There aren’t many built-in tools, and the practice banks are lighter than what I used in the bigger programs. But I found that the explanations are clear, and the dual-unit solutions (USCS and SI) make certain problems easier to track, especially in Civil.

Compared to the School of PE or PPI, Capstone doesn’t have the structure, depth, or variety. But if you like narrated instruction, prefer a slower pace, and don’t need advanced features or huge practice libraries, Capstone gives you a simple, no-frills review that works if you want to stay focused on the fundamentals.

WordPress Data Table Plugin

Package Options

  • ➡️ Instructional Modules: Narrated FE lessons, step-by-step solutions, exam-specific concepts, and tutor support from a PE.
  • ➡️ Solved Problem Sets: Topic-based FE practice problems with detailed solutions and access to a tutor for additional help.
  • ➡️ Sample Exam and Solutions: A full CBT-style practice exam with weighted problem categories and guided walkthroughs.
  • ➡️ Discipline Selection: Available for FE Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, and Other Disciplines.

Course Features

  • Narrated instruction built around FE exam topics
  • Step-by-step problem solutions
  • Tutor support from licensed engineers
  • CBT-aligned sample exam with solutions
  • USCS and SI unit coverage
  • Discipline-specific course options
  • Designed for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam environment
  • Simple, easy-to-follow structure

Pros

  • Simple Narrated Lessons: Explanations move at a slower, steady pace that’s easy to follow.
  • Dual Unit Solutions: Seeing problems worked in both USCS and SI units is genuinely helpful.
  • Tutor Access Included: You can reach out when you need clarification on tougher topics.
  • Multiple FE Disciplines: Covers more than just Civil, which gives it broader use.

Cons

  • Limited Practice Volume: The problem sets feel small compared to top-ranked courses.
  • Basic Platform Tools: There’s no real progress tracking or analytics.
  • Outdated Interface: The platform feels behind more modern FE prep systems

💬 Student Feedback
“I just confirmed they have unlimited access for the course your purchase, i am just hesitating to take it because it seems like no has used it before lol”

thinkingnottothink

Bottom Line: Why Choose Capstone Learning?

Capstone Learning is a good fit if you like narrated lessons and steady walkthroughs. It’s more low-key than the bigger FE prep programs, and the platform stays pretty simple, but the explanations are clear and easy to follow. It doesn’t have the same structure or tools you get with School of PE or PPI2Pass, yet it still works if you prefer a slower pace and a straightforward review style.

5. Genie Prep: Best for Self-Study & Video Practice

Genie Prep

Genie Prep has a very independent feel. The lifetime access is definitely a plus, and the course gives you a big library of short solution videos that walk through problems step by step using the FE Reference Handbook. I did enjoy the videos, specifically because I could watch someone slowly work through some of the math problems; it was helpful getting a step-by-step walkthrough. However, there are some issues.

Namely, most of the course is built around those walkthroughs, so you end up creating your own study routine. There isn’t a study plan, analytics, or anything that guides you from topic to topic. You’re basically setting the pace and structure yourself.

If you prefer flexible, on-demand studying and just want video explanations you can replay whenever you need them, Genie Prep works. It’s simple, self-paced, and focused mainly on problem breakdowns without a bigger system around it.

Genie Prep

  • Lifetime access to all purchased FE prep courses
  • 700+ video solutions across morning and afternoon topics
  • Step-by-step demonstrations using the FE Reference Handbook
  • Practice exams included in bundle packages
  • Discord community for peer support
  • Entirely on demand, learn at your own pace
  • Focused mainly on video-based problem-solving

Pros

  • Lifetime Access: You don’t have to worry about access expiring while you study.
  • Extensive Video Walkthroughs: Hundreds of short videos walk through problems step by step.
  • Handbook-Based Explanations: Solutions consistently reference the FE Reference Handbook.

Cons

  • Inconsistent Depth: Some topics have many lessons, while others feel thin.
  • Limited Exam Simulation: Practice exams aren’t as realistic as partner providers.
  • No Advanced Tools: No analytics, pacing metrics, or guided study plans.
  • Feels More Like a Tutor Channel Than a Full Course: Useful, but not comprehensive.

💬 Student Feedback
“Yes it was worth it. But you can’t solely rely on it. You’ll need other supporting resources, like text books, practice tests, etc. so it’s worth it if you couple it with other resources…”

No-Cup4617

Bottom Line: Why Choose Genie Prep?

Genie Prep is a decent option if you want lifetime access and lots of video explanations without paying premium prices. It’s not nearly as structured, polished, or exam-aligned as School of PE or PPI2Pass, but for students who just want walkthroughs at their own pace, it can fill that gap. Just be ready to guide your own study plan.

6. Testmasters: Best for Instructor-Led Prep

testmasters

Testmasters is one of the most classroom-style FE prep programs I tested. The course gives long, structured lessons and a lot of worked examples, which can help if you prefer reviewing concepts the way they were taught in school. It didn’t always connect with me, though. The 100-plus instructional hours cover the major FE topics, and the workshops provide extra problem practice in a timed format.

That said, the setup is old-fashioned. There’s no modern dashboard, no progress tracking, and no study tools to guide your schedule. You follow their pace, and the workload feels heavier than most students expect.

Testmasters is fine if you want a straightforward, lecture-based review, but it doesn’t offer the flexibility or features you get from the top FE prep courses.

WordPress Data Table Plugin

Package Options

  • ➡️ Classroom Course
106 hours of live weekend instruction, detailed manuals, review lectures, and problem-solving workshops.
  • ➡️ Live-Online Course
Same structure as the classroom format, with scheduled weekend sessions and shipped course materials.
  • ➡️ On-Demand Course
120 days of access to recorded lessons, high-definition video, full manuals, and the complete 106-hour curriculum.
  • ➡️ Custom Group Courses
Private courses for universities or organizations follow the same classroom format.

Key Features

  • 106 hours of structured FE-CBT preparation
  • Review lectures plus dedicated problem-solving workshops
  • Course manuals are included and used for all instruction
  • Pass Guarantee if all requirements are completed
  • Live, On-Demand, and group classroom formats
  • Coverage available for Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Other Disciplines

Pros

  • Instructor-Led Teaching: Long lectures feel familiar if you like classroom learning.
  • Strong Problem Workshops: Timed practice helps reinforce problem-solving skills.
  • Pass Guarantee Included: Adds reassurance if you meet course requirements.

Cons

  • Very Long Sessions: Weekend classes can feel exhausting and time-consuming.
  • Limited Flexibility: Harder to fit around full-time work schedules.
  • Minimal Platform Tools: No dashboards, analytics, or adaptive features.
  • High Cost: Pricing is high relative to the tools provided.

💬 Student Feedback
“I’m currently using test masters, it’s decently setup, but I feel they’re slow to migrate to changes to NCEES’s exams. Not sure if they’ve even come out with a new prep program for the new single topic exam.”

Impossible_Hope8263

Bottom Line: Why Choose Testmasters?

Testmasters works best for students who want a traditional, lecture-driven FE-CBT prep course with long class sessions, lots of worked examples, and a pass guarantee. It’s not flexible or modern, but it does deliver a structured, intensive review with experienced instructors.

7. Engineers Education & Training (EET): Best for Weekly Classes

EET

EET sticks to FE Civil and Environmental, and the setup feels very routine-based. When I tried it, the weekly outline was the part that helped the most. Everything moves through the NCEES topics in order, and the workshop sessions give you more hands-on problem practice than I expected. It has a calm, steady feel, and you always know what you’re walking into each week.

The platform itself is pretty simple. There aren’t any analytics, trackers, or adaptive tools as I had with PPI2Pass, so you’re managing most of your study plan on your own. The pacing is slow and very lecture-heavy, which can be good or bad depending on how you learn. The simulation exam and free repeat are incredibly helpful if you want extra time.

EET works well if you like steady classes, weekly checkpoints, and a traditional, no-frills approach to FE Civil or Environmental prep.

WordPress Data Table Plugin

Package Options

  • Live Webinar or Seminar: Structured weekly classes with live instruction, lecture recordings, workshops, quizzes, a simulation exam, a printed binder, instructor access, and free repeat.
  • On-Demand Subscription: Self-paced access to recorded lectures, workshop recordings, quizzes, a full-length simulation exam, printed binder, instructor access, and flexible study timelines.
  • 10, 16, or 20 Week Plans: Same materials across all plans. The only difference is how long you have access.
  • Custom Group Courses: Programs built for universities or organizations needing a group review option.

Key Features

  • FE Civil and FE Environmental coverage
  • Structured weekly outlines based on the NCEES Handbook
  • Recorded lectures and workshop replays
  • Full-length simulation exam
  • Printed binder for notes and problem sets
  • Instructor access during your subscription
  • Free repeat available with course completion
  • Slower-paced, lecture-first teaching style

Pros

  • Weekly Course Structure: The predictable schedule helps you stay consistent.
  • Simulation Exam Included: Useful for practicing timing before the real exam.

Cons

  • Limited Disciplines: Only supports FE Civil and Environmental.
  • Lecture-Heavy Style: Long lessons can feel slow for some learners.
  • No Advanced Tools: Missing analytics, tracking, and adaptive study features.
  • Basic Platform Experience: Feels less polished than higher-ranked providers.
  • Less Practice Variety: Practice options feel limited compared to top FE prep courses.

💬 Student Feedback
“Maybe there’s different professors for each course, but the course I had, the guy put most of us to sleep and could not properly explain the material…”

Hurricane1123

Bottom Line: Why Choose EET?

EET is a solid match if you want a traditional, lecture-focused FE Civil or Environmental course with a clear weekly structure and a simulation exam. It does not offer the modern tools or teaching variety of the School of PE or PPI2Pass, but it provides a reliable, predictable path if you prefer a steady classroom-style review. Although it isn’t top of my list, it will work for some engineers.

School of PE vs. Testmasters

School of PE balances live instruction, on-demand lessons, structured study plans, and modern platform tools across multiple FE disciplines. Testmasters delivers a classroom-style experience built around 106 hours of instructor-led instruction, emphasizing long lectures and problem-solving workshops rather than dashboards or adaptive study features.

Bottom Line:
→ Choose School of PE if you want a balanced FE prep system with modern tools.

Course Ranking Methodology

Every FE prep course in this guide was evaluated by actually using the platform, trying the tools, and reviewing the practice materials. I looked at how well each course followed the FE exam outline, how clear the explanations were, and whether the practice problems felt realistic compared to NCEES-style questions.

I also paid attention to pacing, study flow, and how easy it was to stay consistent over time. Courses that helped reinforce concepts, build confidence, and create a steady routine ranked higher. Programs that relied too heavily on long lectures or lacked practice variety ranked lower.

WordPress Data Table Plugin

My Final Thoughts

From everything I tested, School of PE came out on top with the most polished lessons, realistic practice, and a study flow that actually helps you stay on track. PPI2Pass follows closely with its structured study plans, deep question banks, and detailed web books, which make it a strong pick if you want a clear routine. Civil Engineering Academy works best for FE Civil students who prefer a simple, focused setup without extra layers.

Each partner has a different style, but all three give you reliable prep. Pick the one that feels closest to how you like to study.
