Sportsman’s Warehouse opening new Elk Grove superstore, hiring for multiple positions
Sportsman’s Warehouse is opening its new Elk Grove location Nov. 19, with plans to hire for as many as 30 positions across the store.
The Utah-based outdoors retailer takes over the 40,109-square-foot space once home to Dick’s Sporting Goods, 8217 Laguna Blvd., in the Laguna Gateway Shopping Center.
Store manager Aaron Loucks and a team of about 100 from stores across the Salt Lake City-based chain have been preparing for the store’s Saturday debut. The crew has taken to Facebook to chart their progress and the store floor is quickly taking shape with rows of rods, reels and fishing tackle and racks of apparel and camping gear.
“We put together a store in less than 10 days. We have a great construction team,” Loucks said during a late afternoon break on Friday. “Field merchandisers, IT people, our receivers unloading trucks and putting it down onto the floor. We’re working hand in hand putting the store together.”
Amid supply chain concerns and the start of the holiday shopping season, Loucks said merchandise will not be an issue for the new Elk Grove location.
“We are going to have a fully stocked store — hiking to camping. We have a huge fishing department,” he said.
Loucks’ team was hard at work again Monday unloading more merchandise, building and stocking shelves and working on lifts high above the store floor. Elk Grove is the last of the 14 Sportsman’s locations to open in a busy 2021, he said.
Loucks said the new Laguna Boulevard store will have 68 employees, including managers, to start, with plans to bump up staffing to as many as 100 positions.
Pay starts at $15 an hour, Loucks said. Job seekers can pick up applications at the store or visit Sportsman’s Warehouse online.
“We’re looking to hire full-time and part-time. All openings are still available,” Loucks said, including positions in archery, hunting and fishing, camping and apparel, front-of-store cashiers and e-commerce employees.
Elk Grove Economic Development officials in March had said the city had lined up a tenant for the store space, but filling the vacancy has been a long time in coming.
Dick’s Sporting Goods left for Sacramento’s Delta Shores shopping center in 2019.
Sportsman’s Warehouse has a solid presence in the Sacramento region and California with locations in Rancho Cordova and Rocklin and 10 more outlets stretching from Eureka to Murrieta in Riverside County.
The outdoor specialty retailer joins Sprouts Farmers Market, Pet Smart and La-Z-Boy Furniture at the shopping center at Laguna and Big Horn boulevards.
