‘That’s how you finish strong!’ Alumni, others react to Elk Grove basketball title
The Elk Grove High School boys basketball team took home the state championship Saturday, and congratulations are pouring in from the community and some notable alumni.
The Thundering Herd beat Foothill of Santa Ana by a final score of 62-56 at Golden 1 Center.
Elk Grove’s Division II title is the first for the school, and just the second ever for a Sacramento-area program.
“That’s how you finish strong!!! @HerdBasketball!!! State Champs!!!” tweeted Lance Briggs, a Sacramento native NFL linebacker who played 12 seasons with the Chicago Bears. Briggs graduated from Elk Grove High in 1999.
Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen wrote in a Facebook post Sunday that she’s in discussions on “how best to recognize” the teams’ championship.
Longtime Kings radio and TV broadcaster Gary Gerould called the title an “extraordinary accomplishment.”
“Well done Elk Grove!!” Gerould tweeted.
