Amazon Fresh closes in on opening date for its newest Sacramento-area store

Amazon Fresh will open its new Elk Grove location early next year, officials at The Ridge shopping center said Monday.

“The grocer has stated that they’ll open the first part of 2023,” said Kelly Rule, vice president of leasing for Pappas Investments, developer of the shopping center at Elk Grove Boulevard and Bruceville Road in Elk Grove.

Signs show the Amazon Fresh location at The Ridge continues to close in on the early 2023 opening day. The facade’s gray-and-spring green canvas, blank for more than a year, now sports the supermarket’s logo.

Cart corrals are in place in the store’s parking lots while a peek inside finds workers applying what appear to be finishing touches to the nearly 42,000 square-foot layout and its 25,000 square-foot sales floor.

Construction crews began clearing earth for the store site in Spring 2021. Cosmetics retailer Sephora, which shares space on the lot with the grocer, has been open for several months while the Amazon supermarket continues to take shape.

The Elk Grove site is one of two Sacramento-area locations preparing for upcoming opening dates. Amazon selected a Roseville site on Stanford Ranch Road as its first Northern California location, The Bee reported in January.

The Fresh store concept features voice-activated Alexa features, such as Ask Alexa, that help shoppers find store items; app-aided shopping; and Amazon Dash Cart, which allows shoppers to bypass checkout lines. Same-day delivery and pick-up are also available.

Amazon Fresh opened its first location in Woodland Hills in September 2020 and has since expanded to 17 cities across Southern California; as well as sites in Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington state and Washington, D.C.
