Elk Grove reopening cooling center as another wave of triple-digit heat returns to region

Cooling centers

Elk Grove is reopening its police department cooling center Saturday through Monday as another summer wave of triple-digit heat returns to the Sacramento region.

The cooling center in the lobby of Elk Grove Police Department, 8400 Laguna Palms Way, will be open noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday for residents without adequate shelter or home cooling. A limited number of animal kennels will also be available for house pets.

National Weather Service forecasters in Sacramento say the Sacramento area will be under moderate to major heat risk this weekend. That means the level of heat expected will affect most people sensitive to heat, especially those without access to cooling or adequate hydration.

Temperatures in the Sacramento region are expected to be in the 100s this weekend peaking at 105 degrees in Sacramento. on Sunday.
