The Sacramento Zoo’s anticipated relocation to the city of Elk Grove continues to develop, as officials have shared a more detailed vision of what the site, a 65-acre potential location in Elk Grove at Lotz Parkway and Kammerer Road, will look like.

The City of Elk Grove and the Sacramento Zoological Society last week released a series of illustrations that paint a picture of how a state-of-the-art zoological park serving the greater Sacramento area may ideally look.

The drawings, prepared by SHR Studios and Mangolin Creative, feature a “multi-phased, modern zoo featuring expansive savannas” where guests can learn about various animals that will be housed there including the white rhinoceros, Masai giraffe, hippopotamus and flamingos.

The drawings also illustrate zoo-goers dining alongside animals, giraffe feeding, an animal vet center and an overnight stay in a luxury tent-cabin with views of the park’s hippopotamus lake.

The next steps, which could take another year to complete, involve coming up with a schematic design, a financing plan and completing an environmental impact review.

Elk Grove City Council could make a formal consideration of the zoo and approve the start of the construction as early as the end of 2023, according to the Sacramento Zoological Society.
