Women’s Day event draws crowd to Sacramento City College
More than 1,000 people celebrated International Women’s Day at Sacramento City College on Saturday.
The Sacramento County Commission on the Status of Women and Girls hosted the inaugural Women and Girls Festival, inviting families to an event meant to uplift women and girls.
It was a lively atmosphere in the quad area, where the crowd enjoyed performers, martial arts tutorials, Zumba classes, food and prizes.
The event had nearly 100 vendors, helping empower women and girls in the capital region.
The commission was established in 2021, according to its Facebook page. It acts to shape policy decisions that affect women and girls. The event had numerous sponsors, including the nonprofit organization Friends of the Commission.
Friends of the Commission Chair Charmen Goehring said the event was intended to introduce the commission to the public in an interactive and informative way.
“I think this is a way to really show the community who the commission is,” Goehring said. “(Bringing) all these organizations, county and community organizations out to just be a one-stop shop for women and girls and families to get information that they might need to help their lives.”
In addition to shaping policies, Goehring said that the commission aims to be a connector for women and girls in different parts of the county, bringing them together through empowerment and support organizations.
Further information about the commission — including how women and girls can serve on the commission — is available on Sacramento County’s website.
