It was a bittersweet day Thursday for the Folsom Police Department as one if its K-9 officers, Loki the German Shepherd, retired.

Loki had been with the department for four years before his departure. He started at the department in 2019 and was assigned to the patrol division, according to a dispatch announcement posted on the department’s Facebook page.

“You will be missed,” the dispatcher said on his last day. “However, your loud barking will not.”

The department said Loki is trained in patrol operations and narcotic detection.

In the Facebook post written from the perspective of Loki, he thanks his handler, Officer Brian Airoso, “and everyone who gave me scratches behind my ears.”

“After 28 dog-years, I’ve decided to hang up my collar and retire,” the post read. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved every day of work! I got to meet new people, smell so many interesting smells and be part of that important team that keeps the squirrels on their toes.”
