The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that one of its K-9 officers died after a sudden medical emergency at home following an exercise session.

Apollo, a 6-year-old K-9 officer, was surrounded by his family, fellow members of the K-9 unit and other law enforcement personnel at the time of his death.

“Apollo was a true asset to the communities of El Dorado County as not only an apprehension and detection K9 but also loved for his various demonstrations at schools and public events,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a statement. “His demeanor was a perfect blend of calmness and laser focused seriousness when his talents were needed.”

The German shepherd joined the Sheriff’s Office in November 2020 when he was 10 months old. He was born in the Czech Republic and had partnered with Deputy Brad Hellam.

Apollo was cross-trained in handler protection and narcotics detection, according the Sheriff’s Office.
