Fireworks violations in Rancho Cordova will now carry steeper penalties under a new ordinance approved by city leaders, including a $1,000 fine for each illegal firework.

The Rancho Cordova City Council approved changes to the city’s fireworks ordinance, including higher fines for the use or possession of illegal fireworks and a revised application timeline for vendors. The measure, part of the City Council’s consent calendar, was passed unanimously March 2.

Any fireworks violation in the city, including for fireworks that explode or leave the ground, is subject to a $1,000 fine per violation. “Each single illegal firework shall be considered a separate violation,” the ordinance reads.

Previously, the first violation carried a $1,000 fine. A second violation within a year increased the fine to $2,500, and additional violations were subject to a $5,000 fine.

The ordinance states the previous fine structure “does not adequately deter the launching of illegal fireworks” and that the change “will create a more effective deterrent and a clearer enforcement standard.”

A violation on school grounds is subject to a $10,000 fine. The punishment could also include a misdemeanor charge and up to six months in jail, according to the ordinance.

The change is expected to increase revenue to the city’s general fund, according to a staff report.

Sacramento County also approved similar changes in fireworks regulations this month. The Board of Supervisors was scheduled to discuss the amended ordinance at its April 7 meeting and decide on final approval before the changes to fines could take effect May 7.

The application process for selling fireworks was extended. Previously, the application period ran from March 1 to the second Tuesday in April. The period now runs through the first Monday in May. The change is intended to “improve clarity, efficiency, and consistency in the licensing process,” according to the ordinance.

The sale and use of “Safe and Sane” fireworks in the city remain limited to June 28 through July 4. Fireworks are not allowed between the hours of 10 p.m. and 9 a.m.
