Juneteenth celebration planned in Rancho Cordova. What it features
Rancho Cordova will host a celebration honoring Juneteenth this week ahead of the federal holiday.
The celebration will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at Hagan Community Park, 2197 Chase Drive. The event is hosted by Folsom Cordova Community Partnership, a local nonprofit organization.
The federal holiday recognizes June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
“This day honors Black history, celebrates the enduring resilience of the Black community, and serves as a vital reminder of the ongoing journey toward true racial equity and justice,” the event description on the city of Rancho Cordova’s website reads.
The event will feature live music, dance and other performances by local artists, as well as family-friendly activities, according to the event description from the nonprofit group. It will also feature a marketplace selling crafts and other items from Black-owned businesses.
The celebration is free and will include free food while supplies last, according to the event description.
