Placer sheriff’s deputies help find lost hikers near trail in Applegate

Three lost hikers were located and guided back to safety by Placer County sheriff’s deputies Monday.

Air operation deputies in a helicopter responded to assist ground crews searching for the hikers who had been reported lost in Applegate, which is about halfway between Auburn and Colfax, according to a Facebook post Thursday by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

Two of the hikers were found walking on a trail by deputies on the ground, but the third hiker could not immediately be located, though deputies could hear her voice.

Air deputies helped locate the final missing hiker, who was not injured, according to the post by the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies on the ground helped guide her back to the trail.

“We don’t normally have rescue stories to share with a positive ending, but this is one of them,” the sheriff’s office said in the Facebook post.

Though no one was hurt, sheriff’s officials used the social media post to remind hikers not to traverse foreign or remote territory without functioning GPS. Hikers should also always inform friends and family where they will be.
