Watch bear hop out of driver’s seat of an SUV after Placer deputies break window

Placer County Sheriff’s deputies helped rescue a bear from a locked vehicle this week in Colfax, and used the incident to remind the community not to leave food, drinks or candy bar wrappers in their cars.

Authorities responding to a call for suspicious circumstances discovered a bear had gotten itself locked inside a silver SUV, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in social media posts Thursday.

Deputies had to break a window “with a 40 mm round” to let the brown bear out safely. Video posted by the Sheriff’s Office shows the bear calmly hopping out of the shattered driver’s side window unharmed — then shows the vehicle’s interior, which was slashed by the bear.

“A reminder about bears to our community: when they are hungry, they will seek any source of food they can find — in this case — it was someone’s car,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post Thursday morning.

Placer authorities reminded residents to always lock the doors to their cars and their homes.
