Shanti Landon widens lead over Scott Alvord in race for Placer County supervisor’s seat
A winner has emerged in the race to represent western Placer County.
Shanti Landon pulled ahead, earning 55% of the vote. Scott Alvord trailed at 45%.
Alvord and Landon have been battling in the race for the District 2 Supervisor seat, which has been held by Supervisor Robert Weygandt since he first won it in 1995.
Early results Tuesday night showed Landon with a 2% lead over Alvord with 51% of the vote. Alvord has 49%. But by Wednesday morning, Landon had widened her lead considerably.
Alvord, a Roseville City Councilmember is a self-described nonpartisan, but he was endorsed by the county’s Democrats as he was the only Democrat in the race.
Alvord ran on a public safety platform and touted his business credentials as a means of supporting safe and responsible growth in Placer County. He was endorsed by several retired members of Roseville’s city government.
Landon, a lesser known name, has worked as the District 2 director under Supervisor Weygandt for the last five years. She called her role as director a “real-life apprenticeship,” saying it gave her the skills and knowledge to run a county.
Landon gained the endorsements of most major players in Placer County politics, including Board of Supervisors Chair Cindy Gustafson, Supervisors Bonnie Gore and Robert Weygandt, Sheriff Wayne Woo, Roseville Mayor Krista Bernasconi, state Sen. Jim Nielsen, Assemblymember Kevin Kiley and Congressman Tom McClintock.
Also backed by the county’s deputy sheriffs’ association and farm bureau, Landon tried to position herself as the qualified, knowledgeable voice West Placer County needs.
