The opening of a long-anticipated Costco in Loomis has been delayed, officials confirmed Tuesday.

The new Costco, being built along the Loomis and Rocklin border south of Taylor Road, is now expected to open in spring 2024.

“Costco is currently anticipating stocking the store display shelves in March 2024,” said Loomis Town Manager Wes Heathcock in an email to The Sacramento Bee. “Depending on how the construction process goes, the timeline could shorten by a month (February 2024) or extend by a month (April 2024).”

The store was first proposed in 2018 and has been tied up in an environmental review and legal proceedings ever since. But after a settlement agreement was reached with the city of Rocklin, the project was given the green light.

The site is across the street from Rocklin’s Sierra Crossing Commercial Center, near the Sierra College Boulevard exit from Interstate 80.

One of the conditions of the new agreement is that Costco must draw up a new site plan, but this time without the formerly proposed gas station. The new plan was revised and approved by Loomis’ Town Council in 2022.

As a part of the agreement, the gas station would be replaced with additional parking while road improvements would be added, including a northbound right turn lane into the site from Sierra College Boulevard.

Construction on the road improvements is already underway.

The new location in Loomis will help alleviate some of the traffic at Roseville’s Costco located on Stanford Ranch Road, which draws millions of shoppers from across Placer County and the capital region — making it one of the highest-grossing warehouses in the U.S.

A second Costco will be built in the Roseville city limits in a new shopping center on the corner of Baseline and Fiddyment roads. A groundbreaking for this location, however, has not been announced.
