Davis closes down greenbelt in effort to get a black bear to move out of a pond
Davis’ West Pond Greenbelt was closed Friday morning as authorities worked to move a young black bear that was hunkered down in a pond area, police said. The closure began Thursday night and was expected to end around 8 a.m. Friday. The area was too dense and wet for people to move in and capture the bear, so authorities hoped the bear would wander out on its own.
“Reducing human activity along the greenbelt may help the young bear feel safe enough to exit the basin and either leave town or move to a location where it can be more safely captured and translocated to a safer place to live,” police said.
Police advised people to call 911 immediately if they see a bear.
It’s unclear if this is the same bear police reported in West Davis on Wednesday. Authorities said that bear was a brown bear.
