These are the passport requirements for Americans traveling to Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico boasts a plethora of attractions that are sure to captivate any traveler. From picturesque beaches to lush rainforests, the island is a nature lover’s paradise. In addition, the island is renowned for its iconic dishes and flavorful food, as well as the cafecito (coffee) culture.
For U.S. citizens intending to visit the captivating island, the question of whether a passport is necessary or if alternative travel documents are acceptable may arise. The following information is essential if traveling to “La Isla Del Encanto.”
U.S. citizens are welcome to travel to Puerto Rico without a passport. Puerto Rico is like any other state for Americans because it is a U.S. territory. Any form of government-issued identification, like a driver’s license or state ID card, is sufficient for a trip to Puerto Rico.
AFAR highlights The Jones-Shafroth Act of 1917, which granted Puerto Ricans U.S. citizenship, made this unique arrangement possible. Puerto Rico is therefore considered to be a part of the United States for the purposes of immigration and travel.
Although U.S. citizens don’t need a passport to enter Puerto Rico, you’ll still need one if you want to leave the island. A valid passport is required if your itinerary includes travel to the neighboring Dominican Republic or the British Virgin Islands.
The same passport and visa requirements apply to visitors from outside the USA as they would if they were entering any other part of the country.
In addition to Hawai’i and Puerto Rico, Americans can travel to the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas). If an American is on a “closed-loop” cruise—one that departs from and returns to the same U.S. port—they may also visit some Caribbean islands without a passport. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative established sea travel regulations that enable Americans to visit Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Mexico without a passport, particularly on closed-loop sailings.
