Sacramento viewers can get a free preview of the new Ken Burns PBS documentary “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies” on March 25 at Sacramento’s Crest Theatre (1013 K St.).

The American Cancer Society, the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and KVIE are presenting the event, which begins at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30). The event will feature a 40-minute-synopsis version of the three-part, six-hour documentary, which tracks the history of cancer and offers personal accounts from patients and survivors. The documentary series is based on oncologist and author Siddhartha Mukherjee’s Puliter Prize-winning 2010 book “The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.”

A panel discussion will follow the screening. Panelists include Tris Imboden, drummer for the band Chicago and a cancer survivor.

Tickets to the free event can be reserved at www.kvie.org/events.

The documentary series, directed by Barak Goodman and produced by Burns, will air on KVIE at 9 p.m. March 30, March 31 and April 1.
