In 2014, the San Francisco 49ers moved out of outdated Candlestick Park – now demolished – and moved to shiny new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. The $1.3 billion stadium, about 40 miles from San Francisco, has been the team’s home for three years, giving fans all the amenities expected in a modern NFL stadium.
But Levi’s isn’t just a football stadium. It’s hosted a wide range of events, from Super Bowl 50 to WrestleMania 31 to Beyonce. With 1.85 million square feet, approximately 68,500 seats and 165 luxury suites, the stadium is known as one of the world’s premier sports and entertainment venues, recognized as Sports Facility of the Year by Sports Business Journal in 2015.
The stadium also is known for its environmental sustainability. It features a 27,000-square-foot “Green Roof” and three solar bridges connecting the main parking area to the stadium. For those not into hot dogs and beer, there are plenty of farm-to-table options on the menu.
If you come to a game and forget your sunscreen or other game-enhancing accessory, don’t fret – Amazon Prime can take your order and get you your product within an hour, as long as you make the order before the game.
Even within the modern stadium, there is plenty of homage to the past. The 20,000-square-foot 49ers Museum features a 49ers Hall of Fame, a movie theater and an augmented reality exhibit where guests can interact with players from the past and present.
Five things to know
It’s full of technology – The stadium features 400 miles of cabling, including 70 exclusively for Wi-Fi, and was the first stadium to carry 40 Gb/s of internet capacity. You don’t even have to wait until you’re home to post pictures!
More than the NFL – Levi’s Stadium doesn’t only host 49ers games. It’s also held a regular-season college football game between Oregon and Cal and will host the Pac-12 championship for the fourth consecutive time in December.
Plenty of parking – Levi’s Stadium has 31,600 parking spaces. You shouldn’t have trouble finding one.
It hosted soccer first – The first event at Levi’s Stadium was an MLS match between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Seattle Sounders on July 17, 2014. The 49ers played their first game there in the 2014 preseason about a month later.
Could hve been double fun – For a while, there was a possibility that the Oakland Raiders would become co-tenants with the 49ers, but owner Mark Davis decided to move the Raiders to Las Vegas.
