The final price for the watch includes a buyer’s premium of 12.5 percent on top of the $15.5 million final bid and surpasses the previous record for a wristwatch by more than $6 million.
The model is the most sought-after Daytona model, but the watch sold Thursday wasn’t just any Rolex: It was the one that Newman owned, Forbes reports.
A portion of the sale will go to charities Newman had ties to.
Newman – who was an Academy Award-winning actor, director and race car driver/owner, among several other talents – was 83 when he died Sept. 26, 2008.
