See big top rise for Cirque Du Soleil’s Amaluna show in West Sacramento
The massive tent for Cirque du Soleil’s touring Amaluna show rose at Sutter Health Park in windy conditions on Thursday.
The big top, which stands 62 feet tall, is located outside the ballpark formerly known as Raley Field and its swirly blue-and-white design is visible from points around the city. The four main masts are 82 feet tall.
The process of raising it involves more than 100 workers to lift more than 100 supporting poles, said company manager Lyndal Plum.
“We manually push up every pole around the big top. One it’s up, we bring it to tension to make sure it stays in place.”
Once assembled, the tent seats more than 2,600 people.
Amaluna features a cast of acrobats and performers that is roughly 70% women.
“We have a lot of females in the the show,” Plum said. “It started as a show about women. It’s progressed past that into a show about relationships.”
