Three to Stream: Holiday weekend on the airwaves with K-ZAP, High Sierra festival
We’re devoting our usual “Three to See” concert space to rounding up some info on what local and out-of-town artists are up to as we continue to fight COVID-19. Hosting a show online or releasing new music? Message us on Instagram with details: @adavis_threetosee.
K-ZAP Birthday Celebration Fundraiser (2 p.m. Saturday July 4; 7 p.m. encore broadcast): Odd to figure that the reincarnated K-ZAP is already celebrating its fifth birthday, after the beloved Sacramento radio station, originally launched in 1968, was rebooted in 2015 following a hiatus of more than two decades. They’re celebrating their birthday and the nation’s with a curation of exclusive and rare performances, topped by a full set from (who else?) hometown hero Jackie Greene, along with Elvin Bishop, Tommy Castro, Dramarama, Jocelyn & Chris Arndt, Sammy Hagar, Cherie Curie of the Runaways. They’ll also feature locals Katie Knipp and Zach Waters Band, hosted by Bill Prescott and Scott Forrington. The stream, airing on K-ZAP’s Facebook and YouTube channels, is free, but donations are being collected for the station as well as for K-ZAP pals Sacramento Blues Society (for their “Blues in the Schools” Program) and Girls Rock Sacramento. www.k-zap.org.
“Home Sierra” from High Sierra Music Festival (July 2-5): Assuredly all music festivals have their platoons of loyal attendees and dutiful guardians, but boy would it be especially fun to be a fly on the wall in a room of High Sierra lifers quibbling over which selections from the last 29 years they did or did not choose for this weekend’s sprawling “Home Sierra” retrospective. The show airs on what would have been the festival’s dirty-thirty birthday. Hosted by KVMR, this audio-only, four-day High Sierra history lesson features past festival sets (there are oh so many great ones to choose from) courtesy of Dr. John, Billy Strings, Ben Harper, Gary Clark Jr., John Prine, Warren Haynes, the Lumineers, Los Jobos, John Hiatt, Leftover Salmon, the Slip, J.J. Cale, Trey Anastasio Band and tons more, with 2020 Home Sierra sets recorded from festy favorites Steve Poltz, Lebo (of ALO), Nathan Moore, Marco Benevento and many others. Just be nice to your neighbors if you decide to really get into the spirit and strike up a game of at-home sunrise kickball (it’s a thing at High Sierra, and it’s glorious) highsierramusic.com/home-sierra.
“Happy Birthday USA” with Music in the Mountains (7 p.m. Friday July 3): As part of their Virtual Summerfest, which goes through next weekend, the folks from Music in the Mountains have organized an online Fourth of July celebration (pay-what-you-can tickets are available on their website) with a live and prerecorded collaborative performance of American standards, with free preconcert entertainment at 6 p.m. on the festival’s YouTube channel. www.facebook.com/Musicinthemountains.
Jazz in the Pines (July 5-17): Located down south in Idyllwild, the annual Jazz in the Pines festival is forging ahead with a series of live and recorded performances, as well as an “In Conversation” series with the artists and collaborative performances with the musicians (aged 14 to 18) from Idyllwild Arts summer jazz workshops. Festival co-founder and jazz bassist Marshall Hawkins and his trio lead a bevy of jazz, blues and R&B sets lined up throughout the first two weeks of July, this year curated by vocalist Rose Colella, who also performs. www.jazzinthepines.com.
