Three to Stream: New music from Golden Cadillacs; Nellie McKay joins ‘Six Feet Apart’
We’re devoting our usual “Three to See” concert space to rounding up some info on what local and out-of-town artists are up to as we continue to fight COVID-19. Hosting a show online or releasing new music? Message us on Instagram with details: @adavis_threetosee.
New single from Golden Cadillacs: Local Americana mainstay Golden Cadillacs last week dropped a blustering midsummer treat with their new single “On the Vine” (with a nice hot sear of keys courtesy of Jackie Greene), the rollicking first song from their forthcoming as-yet untitled new record. The venerable Caddies — among the region’s most workmanlike bands as it comes to live gigs — had originally eyed a July release for the record with a hefty slate of performances surrounding it, but now are planning a gradual rollout of single releases until they can play a proper release show. That time can’t get here quick enough! thegoldencadillacs.bandcamp.com.
Nellie McKay at the Sofia’s “Six Feet Apart” (7 p.m. Friday July 31): The proper decade in which the wistful, enigmatic and ambiently sassy Nellie McKay might choose to nest has not yet been identified. She flies unfettered between them, soaking up a bird’s-eye view of what made each one special — sultry vintage pop, The Great American Songbook, devil-on-your-shoulder jazz noir, blues, folk, you name it — then glides off in an inexhaustible search for more. McKay’s live stream vaults a delicious month for the B Street Theatre’s “Six Feet Apart” weekly happening, with Michael Masse’ (Aug. 7), roots music darling Amythyst Kiah (Aug. 14), rock-bluegrass outfit Dirty Cello (Aug. 21) and pianist Lara Downes (Aug. 28) all on deck. bstreettheatre.org/six-feet-apart.
Jerry Bash (and a bunch more Grateful Dead): With Saturday, August 1, marking what would have been the legendary Jerry Garcia’s 78th birthday, Nevada City’s Miners Foundry is recasting the 2019 edition of Jerry Bash at 6 p.m., with tribute tunes performed that day by the Deadbeats. The show is free, but donations for the venue are being accepted at minersfoundry.org. If you want a bigger helping (and what DeadHead doesn’t?), the nine-day sprawl of Daze Between (August 1 to August 9, the dates Garcia was born and died) will feature archived Grateful Dead, Dead & Company and Bob Weir sets, with tons of new and archival performances from David Grisman, Del McCoury, Graham Nash, Greensky Bluegrass, Marco Benevento, Nicki Bluhm, the Record Company and boatloads more. www.dazebetween.com.
The Online Petaluma Music Festival (Saturday August 1): To be clear, all of the Covid cancellations suck, but with Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, the Motet and Monophonics topping the vacated 2020 bill, this one really burns for those who love that funk, as well as for frequenters (*raises hand*) of this gem of a Sonoma County shindig. The festival last year raised $60,000 for music programs in local schools. Their online party features prior-year PMF sets from Wood Brothers, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Railroad Earth, ALO, Mother Hips, David Nelson Band, Poor Man’s Whiskey and others, with at-home sets from the Motet and festival alums such as Ron Artis II, T Sisters and Royal Jelly Jive. petalumamusicfestival.org.
Lollapalooza 2020 (Thursday July 30 through Sunday August 2): Fabled rock mecca Lollapalooza’s free digital weekend of music and activism is slated to include more than 150 performances and appearances, with some sets from previous Lollas and some originals. At press time the full lineup hasn’t been unveiled (it drops on July 29) but archived gigs are teased from Paul McCartney, Chance The Rapper, OutKast, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Metallica, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alabama Shakes and more. There’s also new original live performances from the likes of Alison Wonderland, H.E.R., Kaskade, Louis the Child, Tank and the Bangas, the Neighbourhood and Yungblud, with Michelle Obama, festival founder Perry Ferrell, Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot and other figures appearing throughout the weekend. www.lollapalooza.com/information.
Newport Folk Festival Revival Weekend (July 31-August 2): In addition to a warm feast of sets from festivals past on their Newport Folk Radio, there is a special ticketed event at 5:30 p.m. each day: “Mavis 80” featuring Mavis Staples, Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, Ben Harper, Trombone Shorty, Grace Potter, Phoebe Bridgers and more, “Deer Tick & Friends” with Deer Tick, Leon Bridges, Robert Ellis, Sharon Van Etten, The Tallest Man on Earth and Courtney Marie Andrews, and the new concert film “Our Voices Together.” newportfolk.org/revival.
